With only 3,000 residents, Granite Falls in southwest Minnesota isn't on many people's tourism radar. But one of our writers was there recently and found plenty of small-town charm, plus several world-class attractions.
Downtown is home to the namesake falls, a charming suspension footbridge across the Minnesota River, an old-fashioned popcorn stand.
It was the hometown of Minnesota Representative Andrew J. Volstead, namesake of prohibition's Volstead Act. His home is now a museum with historic artifacts, including his 1926 Time Magazine cover and a prescription for alcohol.
There's also the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum, started by a World War II vet's son who has amassed a huge collection of vintage aircraft and ground vehicles from the war.
One more thing to note before it gets too cold: The nearby Upper Sioux Agency State Park is one of the few that offers tipis for overnight rental to get a taste of what life was like before white settlers came to the prairie.
