The 1919 scandal that rocked Major League Baseball takes center stage when the Minnesota Opera presents the world premiere of The Fix as part of its just-announced 2018-19 season. It's one of four works that Minnesota audiences will be seeing for the first time when the season starts in October, in addition to encore performances of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Silent Night.
The Fix, by composer Joel Puckett and librettist Eric Simonson, tells the story of the Chicago White Sox and how eight of its players conspired to throw the 1919 World Series. It runs March 16-24 at St. Paul's Ordway Center, where all five of next season's productions will be presented.
Three Italian operas will form the core of the season: Giacomo Puccini's La Rondine, from Oct. 6-14; Nino Rota's The Italian Straw Hat, from Jan. 26-Feb. 3; and Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, from May 4-19, 2019.
Silent Night, with music by Kevin Puts and libretto by Mark Campbell, returns Nov. 10-18 to the place that it started for a preholiday run during the centennial of World War I. The critically acclaimed production tells the story of the historic Christmas Eve truce on the battlefront.
"This season exemplifies Minnesota Opera's continued commitment to excellence and storytelling that resonates with our audiences," president and general director Ryan Taylor said. "By bringing innovative creative teams, a mix of classics and contemporary compositions, and some of the world's most exciting singers to Minnesota, we are expanding what opera can be to our community."
