An appreciation of Bach's music grew slowly in the 19th century, especially in France. One outspoken proponent of Bach was composer Cesar Franck. His 1885 work Prelude, Chorale and Fugue is a tribute to the austerity, yet deep-feeling nature, of Bach. One critic wrote: "The piece is an essay in which doubt and faith, darkness and light, oscillate until a final ecstatic resolution." And that is what you feel in Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen approach to this piece. His performance from a Frederic Chopin Society recital earlier this year is in this week's Regional Spotlight.
