There are many times when opera plots seem far fetched — stories that we can't possibly relate to in our everyday lives.
On the surface, you might say that's the case with Thais, by Jules Massenet. It's about an actress and courtesan who's come to a turning point in her life. Although she's wealthy and famous, there's a feeling of emptiness she can't seem to shake. Just as she's wondering who she really is and what's most important to her, she meets a monk who is determined to take her away from her life of sin and offer her eternal life through God.
While your existential crisis (assuming you have one now and then) might sound a little different than that, you might find a common thread or two.
Minnesota Opera's stunning production runs through May 20 at the Ordway. The cast includes Minnesota native Kelly Kaduce in the title role. Sets and costumes are eye-popping! Take a look at the production photos below.
