Rose Ensemble says next season will be its last

The St. Paul-based early music group the Rose Ensemble announced Wednesday that next season will be its last.

The ensemble which performs music written in the 18th century or before, recently suffered a series of financial setbacks, including unexpected legal costs resulting from a random state audit.

Founder and artistic director Jordon Sramek says that after weeks of fundraising, the books are balanced for last season. Now, the ensemble is raising money to perform as much as possible of next season.

"What we hope to do is to be able to announce our season later this summer," he says. "We have a lot that has already been planned, and I would just like to be able to unfold as much of that which we have planned as we possibly can."

The ensemble performed almost 50 concerts across the United States and Europe in the past year, as well as 40 free outreach concerts across Minnesota. It is one of MPR's 2018 Class Notes Artists.

The Rose Ensemble was founded 22 years ago and just released its 11th recording.
