Flicks in Five: Jerome Moss

Flicks in Five: Jerome Moss

Aug. 1 marked the birthday of film composer Jerome Moross, born 105 years ago. Moross worked on a number of films between the late 1940s and 1969, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Proud Rebel, The Cardinal, The War Lord, and Rachel, Rachel.

As a young man, he was part of a young composers group with another famous film composer, Bernard Herrmann. And in the 1930s, it was through this group that Moross met Aaron Copland. The two became friends and supported each other throughout their careers.

He was probably best known for his 1958 film score, The Big Country, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Music. The soundtrack was supposedly inspired by roaming the flat lands surrounding Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On this week's Flicks in Five, we'll hear the main credits for The Big Country'.
