Sondheim's classical musical is back, this time at Theater Latte Da in Minneapolis. What better way to warm up a Minnesota February than a story set in Swedish mid-summer? In fact, A Little Night Music takes its story from an Ingmar Bergman movie titled "Smiles of a Summer Night," and you sense that smiling warmth anytime stars Mark Benninghofen and Sally Wingert take the stage. Playing former lovers Fredrik and Desiree, they're fanning an old flame in a story that director Hal Prince described as "Whipped cream with knives"!
Mark and Sally came to Classical MPR to talk with John Birge about the new production. With Musical Director Jason Hansen at the piano, they sang two songs that frame their characters' funny, flirty, sexy, and sometimes messy, relationship: "You Must Meet My Wife," and the iconic, ironic, beautifully bitter and sweet "Send in the Clowns."
