YourClassical Storytime meets 15 Common Core Standards

Our online presentation of YourClassical Storytime meets 15 Common Core State Standards for English language arts, reading and literature from kindergarten through fifth grade. The standards offer a focus for instruction each year and help ensure that students gain adequate exposure to a range of texts and tasks.

The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). Forty-one states (only ELA in Minnesota), the District of Columbia, four U.S. territories and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) have adopted the Common Core State Standards.

The learning standards define the knowledge and skills students should have gained by the completion of each grade level throughout their K-12 education. The goals were created to ensure that all U.S. students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career and life, regardless of where they live.

The online presentation of YourClassical Storytime meets the following K-5 reading standards for literature, and the shorthand names (in parentheses) have been added to the keywords for their YouTube versions:

Kindergarten: Craft and structure

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.2 (RL.K.2)
With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.6 (RL.K.6)
With prompting and support, name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role of each in telling the story.

Kindergarten: Integration of knowledge and ideas

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.7 (RL.K.7)
With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.9 (RL.K.9)
With prompting and support, compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories.

Grade 1: Key ideas and details

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2 (RL.1.2)
Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

Grade 2: Key ideas and details

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2 (RL.2.2)
Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson or moral.

Grade 2: Craft and structure

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.6 (RL.2.6)
Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

Grade 2: Integration of knowledge and ideas

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.7 (RL.2.7)
Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting or plot.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.9 (RL.2.9)
Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

Grade 3: Key ideas and details

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.2 (RL.3.2)
Recount stories, including fables, folktales and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.

Grade 3: Integration of knowledge and ideas

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.7 (RL.3.7)
Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting)

Grade 4: Integration of knowledge and ideas

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.7 (RL.4.7)
Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.9 (RL.4.9)
Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g., opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g., the quest) in stories, myths and traditional literature from different cultures.

Grade 5: Integration of knowledge and ideas

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.7 (RL.5.7)
Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.9 (RL.5.9)
Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., mysteries and adventure stories) on their approaches to similar themes and topics.
