John Kuntz, 2015 Showcase Composer
Age: 23
Hometown: Eagan, Minn.
Attending: University of Memphis' Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, Memphis, Tenn.
I'm pursuing a Master of Music degree in music composition at the University of Memphis after graduating last May from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Ideally, I would like to earn a Doctoral degree in music composition from somewhere in New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles or London. I do intend to take a gap year between my Master's and Doctoral degrees and move to one of these cities to actively work as a musician, among other things.
Minnesota Varsity was the first competition I won which instilled in me a sense of musical confidence. In high school, music was often pushed to the side to accommodate other learnings. For me, Minnesota Varsity was a major steppingstone in placing music composition more centrally in my life while indicating to others my potential in this field. It also was the first time I heard one of my pieces performed by professional musicians and taught me much about performance practice of new music.
