Weekend picks in classical music, opera and more in the Twin Cities and beyond

After last weekend's Minnesota violin summit of superstar Joshua Bell and Carnegie-bound Grace Park, this weekend makes it a hat trick with the return of Leila Josefowicz playing Stravinsky with the Minnesota Orchestra. As if that wasn't sufficiently scaling the musical heights, the same concert features the rare Richard Strauss tone poem An Alpine Symphony, with its twenty horn parts and all.

Maybe that's why the St. Cloud Symphony imported their horn soloist this weekend. Patrick Hughes is a St. Olaf alum now teaching at University of Texas. The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra makes it a Texas two-fer with guest conductor Ruth Reinhardt, Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Symphony.

Speaking of two-fers, the Bard is well-represented in the Twin Cities with a spooky Macbeth performed in and around the James J. Hill House by Wayward Theater. Meanwhile, Ten Thousand Things takes on The Winter's Tale, up close and personal at St. Paul's North Garden, with a superb cast.

And before you start the weekend, a Thursday bookmark: Jake Heggie, one of the best and busiest opera composers in the world, is at St. Olaf College for a free talk titled "Where the Music Comes From: The Fire of Possibility." Heggie's Dead Man Walking is one of the most-performed operas by a living composer (including Minnesota Opera last year, and a new Metropolitan Opera production in 2020-21).
