Target age range: Grades K-5 (adjust as needed)
Music is full of many different kinds of patterns. A very common pattern in music is ABA. We hear one thing, then something different, then the first thing again.
1. Listen and watch the Class Notes Video 'Song and Dance in Asturias.'
2. Remember that music is full of patterns, especially the "same-different-same" pattern we heard in the video.
3. Create your own ABA composition. You don't need to notate music; just use a grid to help organize ideas.
4. Write words or draw pictures to suggest sound sources for each section. Think about how long each section lasts, as well as specific rhythms, patterns or sounds within each section. Here is a completed example:
Integrate music terminology or notation if you know it! Use a favorite song you like to sing for one of your sections.
5. Be sure to give your composition a name! Practice performing it and maybe even make a recording to send to a friend or relative. If you share it on Twitter or Instagram, use the hashtag #classical15 and you may see it appear on our Classical15 website!
