The Bard is back! William Shakespeare endured a pandemic lockdown during his time and used it to write King Lear. In any case, it’s great to see Shakespeare back on stage. That includes a delightful take on The Comedy of Errors, which opened at Ten Thousand Things theater in Minneapolis. It’s been trimmed to a concise and COVID-safer 90 minutes in TTT’s trademark crisp, warm style.
Coming in February to the Guthrie Theater is The Tempest, with former artistic director Joe Dowling returning for the first time since 2015. Duluth musician and YourClassical MPR Class Notes Artist Gaelynn Lea is hard at work composing music for Daniel Craig’s Macbeth opening on Broadway on April 28.
Meanwhile, some of the best Shakespeare in the world is on stage in London and will be available to stream next week. Saoirse Ronan is Lady Macbeth in a feminist take on Macbeth and Cush Jumbo, star of The Good Fight/The Good Wife, plays Hamlet at the Young Vic. Both productions are live streams, which means the 7 p.m. start time in the UK is a 1 p.m. matinee in Minnesota.
