Farewell to 2 great American hornists — Lowell Greer, 71, and Dale Clevenger, 81

The classical music world lost two great horn players this week with the deaths of Lowell Greer, 71, and Dale Clevenger, 82.

Greer was a dedicated educator and scholar, as well as an expert on natural horn techniques. Having received international acclaim as an orchestral hornist performing with the Detroit Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony and Antwerp Philharmonic/Royal Flemish Orchestra, he also had a rich solo career. He performed as a soloist with about 50 orchestras and soloed on four albums. His revival of the natural horn and his dynamic educational presence will be missed.

Clevenger served as the principal hornist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1966 to 2013 and was known for his signature sound and powerful presence. Before that, he played in the Kansas City Philharmonic, Symphony of the Air and Leopold Stokowski’s American Symphony Orchestra. He not only had a successful solo career, but he also was an accomplished conductor, with guest appearances that included the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago and National Philharmonic of Slovakia in Bratislava. He inspired more than one generation of horn players to achieve greatness and never stop playing.
