Tuesday’s new moon ushers in the Lunar New Year, and YourClassical MPR celebrates with a special program, Spring Moon – A Musical Celebration of the Lunar New Year. Mindy Ratner guides you through a delightful hour of stories, customs and music from China, Vietnam and Korea.
Saturday night, the Minnesota Orchestra picks up the celebration with their Lunar New Year Celebration, which you’ll hear broadcast live on YourClassical MPR at 8 p.m.
By then, a waxing sliver of moon will smile down on one of the most magical nights of the year in Minneapolis. The Luminary Loppet is a candlelit night for skiing, snowshoeing and strolling on Lake of the Isles, illuminated by 1200 glowing luminaria.
The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra was supposed to be strolling around several Twin Cities venues last weekend, but COVID cancelled their neighborhood series. The show goes on at their home base in St. Paul this weekend.

On Sunday, Feb. 6, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee, marking 70 years of service. That deserves a fanfare. As coincidence would have it, Sunday is also the date for “Trumpet Flourish,” a recital featuring Minnesota Orchestra’s superb principal trumpet, Manny Laureano, with pianist Bethel Balge at Martin Luther Chapel in New Ulm.
