In the realm of contemporary classical music, Kronos Quartet is truly a group without peer. Over the course of its nearly 50-year career, Kronos has been at the forefront of redefining what a string quartet performs, records, commissions and simply is. Kronos has commissioned nearly 1,000 works from living composers — an astounding and unparalleled achievement.
When Kronos performed at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, it showcased new works from its 50 for the Future project, an ambitious endeavor to commission 50 new works from living composers and make the sheet music downloadable to anyone, free on its website.
Your Classical MPR's Steve Seel talked with David Harrington, founder and artistic director of Kronos, about the group's new initiative and how it continues to be a leader in moving classical music forward. Listen now.
