On May 5, 1862, the Mexican Army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla. The battle was considered a great success, specifically because the Mexican troops were able to fend off an army more than twice their size. This battle resulted in a great morale boost for Mexico at the time and has since been celebrated in the Puebla municipality, where the battle took place.
