The pandemic has not been kind to beloved summer music festivals, but one returns full-strength for the first time since 2019. Thursday, the Vintage Band Festival brings bands of all kinds to Northfield Minnesota for four days of band music. From vintage Civil War-era groups to British Brass Bands and even an oom-pah tuba quartet, there are more bands than you can shake a trombone slide at! The price is unbeatable, but go ahead with a free-will donation of course.
Free admission for all is the founding premise of the Lakes Area Music Festival in Brainerd, which gets underway this weekend with a soaring global musical adventure called “Tribute to the Earth.” Put a placeholder on your mid-August calendar for their summer centerpiece, Richard Strauss’ operatic farce Ariadne auf Naxos. Admission is pay-what-you-can, but tickets are required. Get yours early while the gettin’s good!
