Is it an outdated relic of a time gone by, or an instrument still rich with possibilities? The theremin is certainly associated with a very particular era — especially scary movie soundtracks of the 1940s and 50s — but theremin virtuoso Carolina Eyck is spearheading a new era of performance on her instrument. She’s also had major composers write works just for her, and we hear Finnish composer Kalevi Aho’s Theremin Concerto “Eight Seasons” performed by Carolina Eyck this week, recorded live at the 2022 BBC Proms Festival on August 4th.
