A symphonic sense of place

This weekend, lots of orchestras around the region celebrate their place in the world — geographical and musical — with concerts spotlighting their environs, their history and their country. It’s a rich tapestry:

The Winona Symphony Orchestra opens a new season Saturday with “Pioneers of Today,” in which living composers explore the natural beauty of Minnesota, including Reinaldo Moya’s Minnesota Suite, Katherine Bergman’s Superior and the world premiere of Minnesota composer Libby Larsen’s Emergency Haying

The La Crosse Symphony Orchestra is “Saluting Our Own” with a concert that puts orchestra members in the solo spotlight for concertos and the symphonic classic Scheherazade — a great way to open its 125th-anniversary season! By the way, that makes the La Crosse Symphony older than the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra!

The Minnesota Orchestra explores its American roots this weekend with Roy Harris, Samuel Barber, Gabriela Ortiz and Howard Hanson. Of course, you can catch our Friday live broadcast, or stream on demand for 30 days after!

The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra welcomes back New York Philharmonic clarinetist Anthony McGill for Mozart and more. Find them at Carleton College in Northfield, at Benson Great Hall at Bethel University in Arden Hills, and at their home at the Ordway Concert Hall in St. Paul. If you prefer, enjoy them from the comfort of your home by tuning in to our live broadcast Saturday, or stream on demand.
