Voces8 U.S. Scholars and Daniela Mars: 'Crepuscular'

We were privileged to record flutist extraordinaire Daniela Mars performing “Crepuscular” — with pianist Paul Smith and the Voces8 U.S. Scholars — in a special choral version of the song from her new album, Reverence for the Moment.

The soft, crepuscular hours of dawn are the inspiration behind this haunting work, depicting the first moments of morning light rising over the sparse, alien landscape of Joshua Tree National Park in California during a visit by Mars and Smith.

“It was a shared experience of total silence, stillness and peace that I will never forget,” Smith says. The music began as a composition by Smith but adds improvisations by Mars to create a work that is collaborative in every sense. Mars uses extended contrabass flute techniques to play and sing at the same time, harmonizing with herself — augmented by piano and choir. The effect is spellbinding.
