What exactly do musicians do when the summer rolls around and ensemble seasons end for a few months? Many performers head to summer festivals around the country and the world, to continue making music with the best of the best. For singers in Minnesota, another option is The Summer Singers.
On Thursday's Regional Spotlight, we'll hear three selections performed this past July by The Summer Singers. The group began informally with 12 singers under the direction of Grant Norum in 1986. In the early years performances took place every other summer. Now the group with 24 singers perform each summer. In November 2008, the ensemble was invited to perform at the Minnesota State American Choral Directors Association convention at St. Olaf College.
So successful was the Minnesota ACDA appearance, The Summer Singers have been invited to perform at the 2010 ACDA North Central Division Conference in March at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
The Summer Singers are directed by Vicki Peters. Since 2004, they've released three recordings. Members of The Summer Singers regularly perform with ensembles such as the Minnesota Chorale, National Lutheran Choir, and the Minnesota Bach Chorale.
Be sure to tune in to Classical Minnesota Public Radio Thursday afternoon to hear three selections performed by The Summer Singers. You can also hear the audio by clicking on the songs to the right.
