Company of Heroes 2 takes place on the Eastern Front of World War II. Players are most often controlling the Soviet Red Army during the game.
Composer Cris Velasco and developer Relic Entertainment decided the score should sound Russian.
Cris is classically trained and already had a handle on the sound of great Russian composers, like Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev and Sergei Rachmaninoff.
He revisited the big symphonic works of many Russians, and also spent time listening to Russian and Eastern European folk music. The folk music aspect is reflected in the score by his heavy use of solo violin and cello.
Another way to ensure a Russian sound? Use a male choir. Cris didn't want to overuse the choir, and it definitely adds that flavor to the score.
The Capellen Orchestra and Choir recorded the soundtrack in the Czech Republic.
Violinist Nicole Garcia and cellist Cameron Stone play beautifully, as does the Capellen Orchestra and Choir.
