The game Broken Age was funded through a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, raising nearly three-and-a-half million dollars.
"One thing that people don't realize is that, despite the incredibly impressive Kickstarter funding that the game has, this is a teeny, tiny budget for a game."
That's composer Peter McConnell. For the sake of comparison, Grand Theft Auto V cost $265 million to make.
Initially, McConnell planned to use three string players and three wind players. As the game developed, he realized there were scenes that required a bigger ensemble.
"As I started to do sketches for some of the scenes, and the game started to evolve, there was this scene with this gigantic beast who's coming out of the distance and rising out of a lake, and I thought - what am I gonna do?"
McConnell ended up working with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
The score is magnificent — McConnell's music is always so full of detail and style.
You can find the soundtrack to Broken Age on Bandcamp, and subscribe to episodes of Top Score on iTunes.
