I first heard cellist Tina Guo on Austin Wintory's award-winning soundtrack to the game Journey. That cello-centric score took many of us by surprise, and it showcases Tina's more traditional abilities.
In addition to her normal cello (an 1878 Gand and Bernadel she named Cello Guo), Tina frequently rocks out on an electric cello. You can hear her shred on soundtracks for Diablo III and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
This video highlights a concert suite Austin Wintory wrote from his music to Journey:
Tina's parents were strict; she practiced up to eight hours a day. Additionally, she was forbidden to listen to "bad" music, but Tina had a fascination with Marilyn Manson's music. A high school friend loaned her Manson's music so she could copy it and learn more about what most would call the antithesis to classical music.
Hear Tina talk about her career, her musical evolution and her cellos on Top Score from Classical Minnesota Public Radio.
