The SPCO Chorale and Dale Warland return with a cast of talented soloists to present a program of works composed for orchestra and voice. Andrew Manze conducts.
The program opens with American composer Peter Lieberson's Neruda Songs, a work written for the composer's wife, which captures the intimacy and tenderness of Pablo Neruda's original poetry. After his wife's passing, Lieberson hand-selected acclaimed mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor to perform the work, and she joins the SPCO as soloist.
The second half of the program represents the culmination of the SPCO's exploration of the complete Beethoven symphony cycle, with the SPCO Chorale joining the orchestra for the monumental, life-affirming Ninth Symphony.
These performances will be the SPCO's final farewell to the Ordway Music Theater before the orchestra moves to its future home in the new Ordway Concert Hall in March.
If you're going to the concert at the Ordway, join Classical MPR's Steve Staruch in the Marzitelli Foyer at 7 p.m. for the Fanfare pre-concert talk. Steve will be interviewing Dale Warland before tonight's program (not on air).
