missingNo's jazzy video-game arrangements

Some bands emerge from years of careful planning and recruiting. missingNo, on the other hand, started with the sentence, "We could probably do this. This would be fun." And after years of hard work and dedication, they have performed in front of thousands.

One of their latest and largest concerts took place at MAGFest, the annual Music and Gaming Festival held in January. When Emily returned from MAGFest this year, she brought back a list of prospective guests. "missingNo" had a star next to it.

It's hard to decide whether missingNo's playing or arranging abilities are more impressive. On one hand, they are a stellar 7-piece jazz ensemble. On the other hand, they arrange video game music into complex, catchy jazz and funk-infused pieces.

The secret, they say, is to start with simple music. Early video game tunes, for example, have fewer voices. Fewer voices means more freedom to create a new sound. For example, Tetris makes a better jazz standard than Destiny.

Simple music, though, can carry its own challenges. If a piece is just 4 or 8 looped measures, turning out a full tune can be daunting. Thankfully, missingNo found ways to make these snippets into some truly lovely tunes.

We're joined in this episode by missingNo's Luis Melgar (trombone), Thomas Houlden (trumpet) and Michael Klein (saxophone).
