Sing to Inspire: It All Started With Choir

Sing To Inspire - It All Started With Choir

In this week's episode, we share a story about how a group of choir and classical music fanatics became became one of the world's most beloved pop vocal groups.

Not gonna lie here, having a conversation with Pentatonix was definitely one of the most nerve-racking things I've ever had to do. I don't think I can even find a word that can justly describe just how popular this group is. They've gone platinum, sold out tours across the globe, and have even won that coveted Grammy award. What was a choral nerd like me going to ask a group like Pentatonix?

Well, they had just performed their hit song Evolution of Music live in our studios and many of those modulations totally made me wonder just how much formal training they've had. Kevin Olusola, the group's cellist and beatboxing specialist, had this to say when I asked them about their classical training and influence, "I think that classical music requires such fine detail. That's what we all try to bring to what we do in Pentatonix. Taking care of that detail work really helps us reach people through the music we share."

Wow! Suddenly a weight had just been lifted off of my shoulders and my day was made when I realized that they were just normal people that loved choir and classical music. After a few more minutes of talking with them, they began reminiscing about the amazing times they shared while participating in their school music programs. There are so many things that I learned from this conversation with PTX, but hearing their stories about rehearsing for all-state and sitting in practice rooms just singing together, truly warmed my heart and gave me hope that groups like Pentatonix can help keep music relevant in the classroom.
