After moving to the Midwest, it became abundantly clear that men singing together is a celebrated pastime. There are so many male chorus festivals each year that I can't even keep track of them all.
Recently, I attended the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA of MN) Annual Conference where over 750 high school and adult male voices combined on a concert. The glorious sounds they made were spine-tingling and the audience responded with a rousing standing ovation. Dr. Michael Culloton and Axel Theimer, the masterminds behind the event, assumed that this would be an incredible experience for all involved and they were spot on!
After the concert, I called ACDA of MN's executive director, Bruce Becker, to get his thoughts on the importance of men singing together. Becker said emphatically, "I think it is important that all men have the opportunity to express themselves artistically. Singing is one of the great areas that can be accomplished. They can all come together, enjoy the art, learn the art, and form a brotherhood to support each other in that journey."
