This past Spring, Classical MPR tried something new. It started with the question, "What would it be like to bring hundreds of singers together on a weekend morning as an ad hoc choir to sing their hearts out?" That's how Bring the Sing was born, with the conviction that music and choir singing even among strangers builds community and adds meaning to life. The events — one in Duluth, one in St. Paul — were experiments. Once singers signed up, they picked up sheet music. Practice tracks were available online for non-music readers. Led by Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, the gatherings were anchored by student and community choirs he had worked with through the preceding week.
Between Duluth and St. Paul, some 560 singers joined forces, at times with wonderful soloists, including Tiny Desk Concert (and Duluthian) Gaelynn Lea, and Twin Cities jazz and gospel powerhouse Fred Steele. Together they performed several moving and a few familiar works. Today on the Choral Stream, you can hear the Duluth Bring the Sing choir perform at 2PM, and the St. Paul counterpart at 8PM. Enjoy — and please join us next year!
