On Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m., a trio of musicians from the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra will perform at the MPR booth at the Minnesota State Fair; the performance will be broadcast live, and Lynne Warfel hosts.
The trio comprises flutist Alicia McQuerrey, violinist Kayla Moffett and cellist Sarah Lewis. According to Lewis, the trio came together rather pragmatically. "The SPCO season hasn't started yet," she explains, "so an email went around to see who was available and who had chamber music ready to go."
Lewis, Moffett and McQuerrey fitted the criteria of being in town and having chamber music they can play together, so the group began rehearsing together two weeks ago. At the State Fair, they'll perform an arrangement of the Haydn trio for two flutes and cello, as well as a number of duets, including the Kodály duo for violin and cello.
"The main thing is we want it to be a polished performance," Lewis says. "We pushed ourselves in terms of how fast we could put the program together in just two weeks. But we have played together, and it's been an interesting puzzle to assemble the repertoire. It's going to be great."

And when the performance is complete, Lewis is looking forward to sampling one of this year's new State Fair foods, the candied bacon doughnut slider. Described as a bacon-filled pastry with a chocolate-red-wine ganache, Lewis dismisses the florid language. "It's a doughnut, basically," she laughs.
