Bonus audio: Dale Warland reflects on this concert

As part of our 50th anniversary each month Classical MPR is digging into our archives to share musical highlights from the past 50 years. This month, we bring you the Dale Warland Singers' farewell concert, recorded live on May 30, 2004, at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. Tom Crann — now MPR News host of All Things Considered — hosted the live broadcast.

Titled "I Have Had Singing," the concert was the capstone on the Dale Warland Singers' 30-year run. "I can't help but think of Charles Ives' quote, 'We should believe in beauty and work'," Warland reflect. "I think that's part of my job. Any way that one can create beauty in one's life and in the lives of people around you I think is the most worthy of calls that there can be. And so it's just been an instinctive thing is to seek beauty wherever I can find it, wherever I can make it."
