Minnesota Orchestra, SPCO earn Grammy nominations

The Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra each received Grammy nominations Tuesday for their latest classical recordings.

The Minnesota Orchestra, led by Osmo Vänskä, was nominated for best orchestral performance for its new recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5, released by the Swedish label Bis. The same forces combined to win a Grammy in 2014, also for best orchestral performance, for their second recording in a Sibelius cycle.

The SPCO was nominated for best chamber music/small ensemble performance for its recording of Franz Schubert's "Death & the Maiden," with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, from the French label Alpha Classics. The SPCO won Grammy Awards in 2014 and 1978.

Also nominated Tuesday was the South Dakota Chorale, along with Brian A. Schmidt and Christopher Jacobson, for its recording of Marcel Tyberg's Masses on Pentatone. The ensemble was recognized in two categories, best choral performance and best engineered classical album.

The Grammy Award winners will be announced Jan. 28 by the Recording Academy.
