Watch: Matthew Shepard interment service, featuring choral performances by Conspirare

Matthew Shepard's death on Oct. 12, 1998, shocked the conscience of the nation and electrified the LGBTQ movement. Watch live Friday morning as his ashes are interred at Washington National Cathedral as part of a service that will include Conspirare singing selections from 'Considering Matthew Shepard' and other choral works.

Here is the official live stream, which started at 9 a.m. central (10 a.m. eastern) Friday, and has now been archived:

"To be asked to sing at Washington National Cathedral is, for any occasion, a momentous invitation," says Craig Hella Johnson, Conspirare artistic director. "To be invited by the cathedral for this particular moment — this final laying to rest of Matthew's ashes — is a matter of the deepest and most meaningful significance. Tears came to my eyes when we first received the call. We have been singing "Matthew's Song" now for four years — this dear Matthew Shepard, whose life and death have broken open the heart of our nation to a vision of a more loving world, past the hatred and divisive climate which troubles us all so greatly."
