Celebrate Women's History Month with Her Voice Productions

If you're looking for a fun and unique way to empower the voices of women during Women's History Month, check out "Short & Sweet," a concert presented March 5 by Minneapolis-based Her Voice Productions.

The Twin Cities Women's Choir, the small ensemble Encore! and the Twin Cities Girls Choir, which all are operated by Her Voice Productions, will present a program that celebrates reinvention, resilience and the power of women's voices Thursday at St. Paul's Park Square Theatre.

In December, I sat down and spoke with the organization's executive director, Elisa Olson, and artistic directors Janice Hunton and Randi Grundahl Rexroth. In that conversation, they explored what diversity looks like in an ensemble made for women and ways in which people who don't identify as women can support and empower the voices of women.

"Supporting the voices of women can be singing, it can be donating, and it can also be being in the room, helping us heft an entire concert," Olson said.

She went on to describe the support of nonsinging members — or the "backups," as their known — as an equally important part of Her Voice Productions, second only to the audience.

How does Her Voice Productions empower women in the real world?

"If they can't say it, they can sing it," Grundahl Rexroth said. "I think that's the biggest thing — to be able to own the sound of their own voice and to be able to put that sound out into the world."

To hear the entire interview, be sure to check out the Trilloquy podcast. For information on the organization and its upcoming concert, visit Her Voice Productions.
