National Lutheran Choir: The Earth Sings Beauty

Minnesota composer Steve Heitzeg’s new work, Lament of the Earth, premiered Sunday, May 1, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, Minnesota.

Composed using texts by Susan Palo Cherwien, Tachibana Hokushi, Winona LaDuke, Terry Tempest Williams and an African proverb (as cited by Alice Walker), Lament of the Earth is an extended work for SATB chorus, youth choir, alto soloist, timpani, percussion and strings. The piece is designed as an intimate musical encounter between the audience and the Earth.

Performers included the National Lutheran Choir, the Minnesota Boychoir, soloist Clara Osowski and conductor David Cherwien. Listen to the concert, broadcasted by YourClassical MPR and hosted by Steve Staruch, now.
