Edicson Ruiz was born in 1985, in Caracas, Venezuela. He began playing double bass when he was 11 years old. Just six years later, Ruiz became the youngest-ever member of the Berlin Philharmonic. Right before the thaw in Cuban-American relations, the Apollo Chamber Players asked composer Arthur Gottschalk to write a quartet based on Cuban folk songs.
