"I think that he had some hope for the piece because he didn't burn it, as he burned so many other pieces. So, if he wanted to be sure that no one was going to play it he should have burned it. But we are really lucky at this moment, and happy that he didn't do it."
That's Osmo Vänskä, the music director of the Minnesota Orchestra talking about the Kullervo Symphony composed by his fellow countryman, Jean Sibelius. It's one of three works on their new live recording featuring all Finnish composers.
Osmo said given the large orchestral and vocal forces needed to pull off this project, it made sense to record it during three live concerts last season. "When we know this is going to be a live recording, it might give us some kind of positive energy and electricity," he says.
