Simone Dinnerstein: The Eye Is the First Circle (Supertrain Records)
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein never thought she’d be able to play the Concord Sonata, by Charles Ives. “I was scared of it,” she says. “The first page alone took me, I think, almost a month to understand.” During the pandemic, however, she was commissioned to develop a multimedia performance with a team of creators at Montclair State University in New Jersey. That’s when she got the idea to combine the Concord Sonata with her father’s most famous painting. The end result became her latest recording, The Eye Is the First Circle.
